I know this sounds like a no brainer when you take into account that hydrochlorothiazide won't kill your pet. However, let's just stop for a minute. You just read that I didn't say "hydrochlorothiazide kills your pet". Why didn't you just say "Hydrochlorothiazide" and move on? Please do read the text I'm providing before you go in, and don't be afraid to ask a question or comment on what you think about this.
Anyway, hydrochlorothiazide is a medication that can't cure your pet's diarrhea. There's no pill, tablet, spray or anything that can keep it from happening. Hydrovax is an anti-diarrheal osmotic diarrhea solution. The problem with it is twofold: 1) you can only get it from your vet which can get expensive and 2) it takes time to try and find it.
What do I mean by this? Well, hydrovax is a medicine that's been around for a long time; there are references to it on almost every page of your classic high school health textbook. You would use a tablet daily to deal with anorexics in your life, right? Well, vet is a pharmacy! But to get hydrovax you have it from his/her pharmacy. Your vet does this in a way that is actually more efficient than the average person because it saves a certain amount of money; every day you can get your pet a little less money, and your pet is going to have less spend on food, so it'll be even easier for them to afford the medicine. Basically, we are not using hydrovax as an anti-diarrheal drug. At least not in any of those places that sell it. We're using it in a way that is little cheaper than they can get it elsewhere.
Even if hydrovax is the exact same as a prescription anti-diarrheal medication, it's only a small improvement on the price. If your pet doesn't eat you can't just keep on giving them a little more food. The medication doesn't allow for frequent use of it either. Every day, half an hour you would have to use something different instead of the normal dose we use every day. This means more meals and feedings, which adds up fast.
As a side note, I'm not blaming the vets at all; I'm just explaining why hydrovax is so expensive. People just can't afford it, don't make the effort to pay and as a result, this medication is available at a much higher cost than it needs to be. is a good drug and has lot of uses (including treating certain health conditions), but the price is just too extreme for the average pet owner.
So my question to you is…what do use treat a simple diarrhea problem instead of a medication that's available at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, CVS, Cetaphil, Amazon, Pet Supplies or online in tiny bottles that cost $12.99? I know this sounds like a very basic question but the answer is a complete no.
